Summary:
This bed has been designed to be used during the recovery period of paralyzed and non-ambulatory animals that spend prolonged times lying in a recumbent position. The anticipated benefits include increased blood flow, and reduced pressure-related blood flow complications that can impair functional recovery and even be life-threatening.
Development Stage:
Description:
The design is a pet bed intended for use in a veterinary hospital or in the home that gently and continually moves in multiple planes so that the animal's body is moved into different positions over time. This movement should help to ensure the patient's skin and muscle receive adequate blood flow without a caregiver needing to physically move the animal. Continuous movement allows for more consistent and extensive relief from pressure-related blood flow complications than that provided by a caregiver. This may be especially advantageous in incidences involving heavier animals, which would require multiple people to regularly move the patient.
Advantages:
• Should help to ensure adequate blood flow in animals that are non-ambulatory and spend prolonged time in a recumbent position.
• Movement helps to reduce the risk of tissue necrosis, bed sores (decubital ulcers), lack of blood flow to vital structures, and respiratory compromise associated with laying in a recumbent position for prolonged times.
• Minimizes the need for a caregiver to physically reposition the animal.
Application:
Veterinary medicine, veterinary hospitals, veterinary rehabilitations centers, caregivers of non-ambulatory animals
