Summary:
ISU researchers have developed a personal protective face mask designed to capture airborne viruses. The mask utilizes sticky entrainment rather than the small-hole entrapment of traditional masks, improving comfort, ease of use, and efficiency.

Description:
The mask utilizes entrainment beds that are designed to allow the easy flow of air and are filled with beads. The beads are covered in sticky, non-toxic compounds such as food-grade oil or edible acids. The sticky compound captures viruses or other particulates, preventing them from being inhaled by the user or from being re-emitted to the environment during exhale. The mask also has a low pressure drop across the entrainment media, indicating that breathing through it should be easier than conventional masks. Additionally, the use of sticky beads rather than small holes seen in traditional masks maintains easier airflow even as particulates are captured.
